Cheetah Brothers Re-captured by Remote Cameras

by مدیر سایت March 31, 2017
written by مدیر سایت 1 minutes read

New camera-trap photographs from Dare Anjir Wildlife Refuge in Southern Iran confirm the persistence of a previously identified coalition of male cheetahs.

1

The cheetahs photographed in Dare Anjir are actually two out three cheetah brothers knowns to us since the first phase of ICS’ countrywide monitoring program in 2012. Once a hotspot of cheetah occurrence in Iran, very few cheetahs have been verified to persist in Yazd Province recently. Worse, there has been no confirmed evidence of female cheetahs in the 75,000-km2 Yazd Province, including Dareh Anjir Wildlife Refuge, since 2012. ICS has released a statement about the critical status of cheetahs in Iran, urging national and international collaborators to act to save the last population of Asiatic cheetahs.

“Cheetah Crossing” Signs Placed in Vehicle Collision Hotspots

by مدیر سایت February 15, 2017
written by مدیر سایت 1 minutes read

ICS member contributed in renewing “cheetah crossing” warning signs in vehicle-cheetah collisions hotspots in a key reserve in eastern Iran. Reza Hosseini, ICS member in Birjand City of South Khorasan Province, collaborated with the local office of the Iranian Department of Environment to place nine new warning signs and maintain the available sign inventory in three hotspots in periphery of Naybandan Wildlife Refuge, a critical cheetah reserve in eastern Iran.

A recent study led by ICS has shown that between 2004 and 2016, at least 14 Critically-Endangered Asiatic cheetahs have been killed on roads in Iran, accounting for about one-third of verified mortalities of the species in the country. Experts believe that low cost tools such as the wildlife crossing warning signs increase awareness among drivers. Simultaneously, authorities must increase enforcement for effective mitigation of road collisions.

“Water for Cheetahs” second yearly report published

by مدیر سایت January 30, 2017
written by مدیر سایت 1 minutes read

Miandasht Wildlife Refuge in North Khorasan Province, northeastern Iran, is a critical cheetah habitat supporting one of the last known populations of the Critically-Endangered Asiatic cheetah with reproducing females. Human-derived degradation, together with prolonged drought and competition between local herders and Miandasht wildlife is threatening this fragile ecosystem. Miandasht rangers are forced to spend the majority of their working time supplying water for artificial water points in the reserve, which negatively affects their routine anti-poaching patrolling of the reserve.

In 2015, the Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS) launched a fundraising campaign to get resources needed to support a local herder in taking over provision of water during warm seasons for artificial drinkers installed across Miandasht. The campaign was a success in 2015 and the local wildlife authority in Miandasht expressed its wiliness for further collaboration with this project. Later supported by a generous grant from Prince Bernhard Nature Fund, ICS re-launched this campaign in July-August 2016.

Thanks to generosity of the Iranian private donors, IRR 56,400,000 was raised during the second year of this campaign. This donation was solely used to provide basic equipment for the local assistant in Miandasht, as well as to pay his salary for 8 months in 2016. The project team is now delighted to announce that the project’s second year report is now available online (in Farsi) and can be download here.

The Executive Office of President Rouhani Cooperates with the Campaign to Save the Asiatic Cheetah from Extinction

by مدیر سایت January 22, 2017
written by مدیر سایت 1 minutes read

In September 2016, the Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS) launched a campaign to encourage the Iranian government to take immediate actions to save the Critically-Endangered Asiatic cheetah from extinction. In total 9,511 Iranian citizens joined this awareness campaign and signed the petition, including renowned Iranian environmental activists, celebrities, and politicians. In October 2016, ICS submitted the petition to the Executive Office of Iran’s President Rouhani together with an official letter explaining the critical status of Asiatic cheetahs and recommendations for urgent actions. To date, the Executive Office of President Rouhani has sent six letters to various governmental bodies and ministries in support of considering this campaign. ICS hopes this campaign, as well as jointly launched petitions, can provide the required governmental support to save the Asiatic cheetah from extinction in Iran.

Cheetah reserve surveyed after a four-year gap

by مدیر سایت January 7, 2017
written by مدیر سایت 1 minutes read

Between October and November 2016, the Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS) surveyed Siah-Kouh National Park and Protected Area after a four-year gap. This camera-trapping survey is a part of ICS’s nation-wide cheetah monitoring program to assess the population status of cheetahs in multiple reserves in central and north-eastern Iran.

More than 26,000 photos and videos of wildlife were obtained during this survey using 22 remotely-triggered camera traps. No photograph of the Critically-Endangered Asiatic cheetah was obtained during this survey. The last known hard evidence of cheetah occurrence in Siah-Kouh was obtained in 2012. However, several photographs of sympatric large and medium-sized carnivores were gathered during this survey, including the gray wolf, caracal, Blanford’s fox, and Rüppell’s fox.

Siah-Kouh National Park and Protected Area are two reserves together covering about 2,000 km2 in the remote desert region between Yazd and Esfahan Provinces in Central Iran. Prolonged drought and more than 300 free-ranging camels grazing both Protected Area and National Park are perceived as main threats to wildlife of Siah-Kouh. The present survey was conducted in collaboration with Yazd Provincial Office of Iran Department of Environment, Conservation of the Asiatic Cheetah Project, and a local NGO in Ardakan County.
