Local People Help to Protect Lynx

by مدیر سایت June 22, 2011
written by مدیر سایت 1 minutes read

In order to celebrate Environment Day, residents of five main villages around Anguran Wildlife Refuge were educated. The educational program was aimed to train local people who are co-existing with the area’s wildlife, especially lynx. Before each workshop, their attitudes about the area’s wildlife were evaluated through a questionnaire survey using images of various species.

The workshops were held within local mosques or high-ranking elders with participation of villages’ people. They were shown a number of wildlife movies taken in Anguran and appropriate explanations were presented. At the end of each workshop, Anguran brochures were distributed among local people.

As part of the workhops, results of two years field research in the area conducted by the ICS’ biologists were shared with local people which were highly welcomed, particularly camera trap images. Also, more than 400 prayers in religious ceremonies were also educated by local religious leader supplemented by brochures.

Anguran Lynx Project has been initiated by the Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS) since 2009 with collaboration of Zanjan Provinicial Office of Iranian Department of Environment to evaluate status of the species in the country. Located in western Iran, Anguran is one of the most important habitats of the Eurasian lynx as well as Armenian mouflon in Iran which is under official protection since 1970.

2010: Year of Leopard Finished

by مدیر سایت May 26, 2011
written by مدیر سایت 1 minutes read

Coincidence of Solar year and Mongolian horoscopy (2010: leopard year) was a wonderful opportunity to highlight Persian leopard as one of the most endangered mammals of Iran. Accordingly, various plans were established to increase public awareness about Persian leopard status in Iran as well as abroad.

We mainly focused on capacity building and training of local experts and game wardens, because they are mainly in charge of conservation of the species who usually suffer from lack of appropriate knowledge and training. On the other hand, an Online Center was established composing of Persian leopard literature to provide interested people easy opportunity to learn the latest findings about the Persian leopard and scientific seminars were organized for university students across the country. Mass media were fed with leopard facts to cover the Iranian community broadly. On the other hand, a dynamic database was prepared and updated regularly based on human-caused mortalities of leopards during the past decade in Iran.

After evaluating the project

Status Assessment for Eurasian Lynx in Iran

by مدیر سایت April 12, 2011
written by مدیر سایت 1 minutes read

The Eurasian lynx is widely distributed in Asia, but is one of the least-known cats. Despite being the largest small cat in Iran, general information about lynx previously consisted of a few historical records (>15) and anecdotal observations from various sources. Since 2006, the Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS), together with Biodiversity & Wildlife Bureau of Iranian Department of the Environment (DoE), have conducted surveys to determine the species status in Iran. The intensive investigation resulted in 167 new geographic records of the elusive animal and document major threats to its persistence. Accordingly, a preliminary assessment of the species distribution and conservation status is presented in Autumn 2010 issue of CAT News (Journal of IUCN/SSC

10 Years of Wildlife Conservation

by مدیر سایت March 27, 2011
written by مدیر سایت 2 minutes read

In 2011, the Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS) celebrates its 10th birthday. Established in 2001, the ICS was launched by three enthusiastic students all committed to do something for the vanishing Asiatic cheetahs in Iran. The animal had a gloomy status at those years and the least hope exists among the most optimistic experts for its survival. Beside the Iranian Department of Environment (DoE), the ICS devoted itself to safeguard the cheetahs in Iran through two practical objectives, namely as research and public awareness.

As working hard through the time, the ICS captured new expertise and equipment and broadened its activities to cover Iranian carnivores, particularly Persian leopard, striped hyena, brown bear, and grey wolf. Accordingly, it has been conducting the first on ground research programs on the species and supported university students to investigate on these creatures. Also, educational plans were implemented across most of vast habitats of the cheetahs in Iran as well as other species. In order to be more effective, the ICS established documentary film as the third section to produce high quality wildlife movies in Iran to illustrate our unique biodiversity for people.

Now, the Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS) has around 30 staffs and more than 300 volunteers in Iran. Also, there is well-organized international network of the ICS representatives based in the Europe and North America supporting us in Iran. We have the highest level of scientific equipment in Iran which can guarantee our hard and continuous efforts in the field. Meanwhile, the ICS has been regularly recognized to receive high-level national and international awards, thanks to severe attempts made by our staffs, volunteers and supporters.

However, the ICS is not happy when sees that almost no coherent is still exist from its generation, nearly all several dozen hundreds of Iranian environmental NGOs started at those years have been faded. We are hopeful to see our second decade of life with more NGOs working in Iran hands in hands to secure future of our biodiversity.

As the most internationally-known Iranian NGO, the Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS) is grateful to all colleagues, partners, donors and sponsors who recognized our passion to the Iranian wildlife and knew us as eligible to be supported. Despite of surviving in harsh and difficult environment, like where the cheetahs live, we are aware that we are now at start point, of course not fragile but robust. Ahead, we see a long way that we can be effective and any possible advice or contribution is highly appreciated. We
